Although most students will take the IB Standard Level (SL) Spanish Exam in May upon completion of this course, some will opt for the Higher Level (HL) exam. Both IB tests are part of the requirements of the IB Diploma Programme. To be eligible to sit for this IB exam the student must complete certain requirements. In addition to the class content, the student must take orals for the Internal Assessment (IA) requirement. Language B IAs consists of oral work that comprises both listening and speaking. Of the total marks for a Language B exams, 30% are allocated to the IA. The assessment of oral work must take place during the final year of the course. The mark for the IA submitted to IB Cardiff consists of two activities, an individual oral (20%) and an interactive oral activity (10%). The IB uses the individual oral to moderate the marks awarded by the teacher for internal assessment. For this purpose, teachers are required to record the individual oral for each candidate. Teachers must also keep a written record of the interactive oral activity undertaken by each candidate.
Additionally, the students will complete an in school written assignment (20%). The assignment for the HL exam is a creative writing of 500-600 words plus a 150-250 word rationale, based on one of the literary texts read. This component MUST be completed under supervision during class hours.
The HL exam in May consists of two additional parts: Paper 1 is Text Handling based on the core topics, 25% is allocated to this section and Paper 2 consists of 2 compulsory writing exercises. Section A: is a writing exercise of 250-400 words based on the option topics. Section B: is a response of 150-250 words to a stimulus text, based on the core topics. The remaining 25% is allocated to Paper 2.
